| Linux desktop adds online, brick-and-mortar retailers |
Mar. 14, 2006
Xandros is making major strides at going mainstream. Last week the Linux distro-maker revealed that online retail giant TigerDirect.com is now carrying its line of desktop Linux operating systems, and Tuesday the company announced that retail giant CompUSA is stocking its Xandros Desktop nationwide.
Xandros joins Linspire and Novell SUSE Linux as the only three Linux distributions available for sale through TigerDirect.com.
TigerDirect.com's move to include a third Linux distro comes in response to growing customer requests for low-cost, easy-to-use alternatives to Microsoft Windows, the Xandros team said.
"An increasing number of customers are asking about Linux desktop alternatives, especially as more and more computing is done on line where security concerns are uppermost," said TigerDirect executive vice president Russell Strunk. "When we examined the options, Xandros products stood out in terms of ease of installation and use, their full-featured application set, and, above all, the simple migration path they provide."
CompUSA, meanwhile, will give Xandros a major presence in the brick and mortar retail market, said Xandros CEO Andy Typaldos. "Xandros is winning acceptance from the mass market at an accelerated rate as it increases its presence at important retailers like CompUSA," he added.
Xandros desktop Linux products offered by both consumer outlets include the following key features, according to the company:- Easy four-step graphical install
- Drag-and-drop data DVD burning
- A complete office suite supporting MS Office and the new OpenDoc formats
- Seamless file sharing on Windows networks
- Ximian Evolution, an easy-to-use alternative to Microsoft Outlook
- Firefox Web browser
Xandros also features its own antivirus scanner, a Xandros Firewall Wizard, encrypted home folders, and secure access to virtual private networks.
Xandros Desktop Business Edition sells for $59.81, its Desktop Deluxe version runs $44.81, Xandros Surfside Linux is priced at $29.99, and the basic Standard Edition goes for $9.99 on the TigerDirect site.
Linspire's Five-O operating systems is priced at $19.99, and its popular Five-O Click-N-Run (CNR) service software sells for $9.99, while Novell SUSE Linux 10 Professional is priced at $99.99 at TigerDirect.com.
