| Welcoming MS Windows users to Linux |
Sep. 16, 2006
This guest column by a relatively new Linux user takes a look at the typical expectations and challenges of transitioning from Windows to Linux, and makes some sensible recommendations. Writer Claus Futtrup started using Linux in 2005, settling on Zenwalk, and has since become an active supporter of that distribution.
Futtrup begins by outlining some of the key issues that confront Windows users when they begin to think about moving to Linux. He then lists the typical reasons for deciding to make the switch, reviews the main differences between Windows and Linux that new users will need to adapt to, debunks some of the "myths" that exist about why Linux is not a practical alternative to Windows, and, finally, makes some recommendations on easing the transition.
