Marcus Moeller has announced the release of version 3.0 of Easys GNU/Linux (formerly PocketLinux), a single-CD Slackware-based distro. The new release boasts a 2.6.17.13 Linux kernel and "full" KDE 3.5.4 desktop instead of the "KDE light" supplied in prior versions.
Easys v3.0 is derived from Slackware Linux 11.0, and includes udev for device initialization, Moeller said. Although the installation defaults to a 2.6.17.13 kernel, 2.4.33.3 is also available as a "stable and well tested alternative."
"Besides current versions of glibc (2.3.6), gcc (3.4.6), and xorg X11R6.9.0 we have included a full version of KDE 3.5.4 instead of KDE light," he added.
Easys 3.0 "has been optimized for easier usage, including one application per task and a fresh enterprise GUI design called waveline," Moeller said. "Kiosktool and KDE Kisok Mode can be used to create user and group policies which allows you to easily setup internet kiosks or locked down workstations."
Due to space limitations, OpenOffice has been replaced with Softmaker, Moeller said. Additionally, a full version of Textmaker 2002 (normally costing EUR 39.95) and a demo version of Planmaker have also been included in the distribution. For those who prefer OpenOffice, the latest version "will still be available on our download page," he added.
Other changes in version 3.0 are the adoption of Amarok as the default music player, and a change back to Gwenview from Digikam, for picture viewing.
According to Moeller, Easys 3.0 is "fully Slackware 11.0 compatible and can be extended using slackpkg or pkgtool. With easys you will be able to install a complete, preconfigured Slackware KDE Desktop System in within 20 minutes."
The current installer includes English, German, and French language support. Minimum recommended system requirements are a 400 MHz Pentium II computer with at least 128 MB RAM (196 MB preferred).
You can download a copy of the 623 MB Easys 3.0 iso file here. The MD5SUM is here. Further details, including download mirror URLs, are on the project's website.
The Germany-based project changed its name from Pocketlinux to Easys GNU/Linux with the v2.1 release last spring.
