Puppy Linux celebrates its success |
Aug. 22, 2006
The Puppy Linux team has organized a "Media Fiesta" to recognize innovations within the mini distribution. The interactive, web-based confab is intended to bring professional Linux developers, intermediate-to-high ability users, and newbies together to share information and tips for using the distro and developing new applications.
As examples of Puppy Linux's significant accomplishments, the team team cites:- the NTFS-write capability of Puppy Linux version 2.02
- the hot reception in Vietnam of Hacao Office based on Puppy Linux (Community OpenOffice 2.02 was subsequently released by Puppy enthusiast Hacao)
- the successful testing of Puppy in 166-Mhz SoC/Sis55x thin client
- the active involvement of youngsters (14 years old and up) in Puppy Linux
- the evident potential of Puppy Linux in helping solve the "digital divide"
"I also coined a new term for the 'work-and-play PC': 'Woopwoop,' a very portable and cheap PC," writes Fiesta organizer Raffy Mananghaya.
The Fiesta continues with live discussion via IRC (accessible here) for newbies who can chat with invited professionals, educators, and managers every Friday from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m., and 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. (Manila/Perth Time).
The original Media Fiesta live conference via IRC was conducted on Aug. 17 and 18. You can read some discussion snippets of the event here:In keeping with the Fiesta spirit, you might want to read BSD consultant Mikael Vingaard's review of Puppy Linux 2.02.
