Sep. 28, 2004
Red Hat has issued the first public beta of its Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4. The software, based on the 2.6 Linux kernel, gives users a preview of the company's next generation desktop and server enterprise operating systems.
Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 Beta 1 includes updated versions of the Kernel (2.6.8), GNOME 2.8 release candidate, OpenOffice.org (1.1.2), Evolution (1.5.94) Mozilla (1.7.2), among key software updates.
This beta release supports both 32-bit and 64-bit computing for x86, AMD64 and Intel EM64T, and Intel Itanium2 families. A detailed list of supported hardware is available here.
Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4, code-named "Nahant," is available now for download and via the Red Hat Network. The company is asking testers for feedback on hardware compatibility including sound, video, networking, storage device, and USB support on both server and desktop-class systems. Updates are available through a network subscription and the Red Hat Update Agent (up2date).
Earlier this month, Red Hat said that its just-announced security upgrade, Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 Update 3, significantly reduces the ability of hackers to compromise software code for enterprise customers. The update was released ahead of schedule.
RHEL4 has been on the Raleigh-based company's schedule for an early 2005 official release.
