Xandros Inc. has announced the release of its Xandros SurfSide Linux, a desktop distribution that aims to be "the Linux product for the Windows user."
Xandros Surfside Linux "reclaims the joy and excitement of using the net, connecting with friends, and having instant information at your fingertips, without the frustration of dealing with viruses, spam, spyware, and pop-up ads," says Xandros CEO Andreas Typaldos.
Designed to stand alone or run alongside Windows on a dual-boot machine, Xandros Surfside Linux boasts:- Drag-and-drop DVD burning
- Seamless file and print sharing on Windows networks
- OpenOffice.org office suite, compatible with Microsoft Office files
- Automatic alerts to software updates
- Access to one of the largest inventories of free Linux software
. . . along with claims of greater security than what Windows alone can offer.
In addition to Mozilla.org's Firefox and Thunderbird, Xandros Inc. says its Surfside Linux makes the net safer with:- Xandros Firewall Wizard to prevent unauthorized access
- Xandros Anti-Virus to scan your files and quarantine malicious intruders
- Encrypted home folder option to shield your personal files from prying eyes
- Encrypted phone calls with Skype to keep others from listening in
- Secure access to your school or business PPTP virtual private network (VPN)
- Immunity from most attacks, since most spyware and viruses exploit the vulnerabilities of Windows-based computers
Additionally, the Xandros Surfside Linux boxed product includes free worldwide Skype-to-Skype voice-over-IP calling and a Plantronics USB headset. For a limited time, Xandros, Inc. is throwing in a Skypeout bonus voucher for up to 120 minutes of calls to any phone number, worldwide.
Xandros Surfside Linux is available now in retails stores or directly from the company's website, priced at USD $99.95.
