| Italy's STUX Linux revs up |

A new preliminary version of the Slackware-based STUX GNU/Linux live CD, version 0.9.2, was released Monday, featuring a 2.6.17 kernel and the KDE desktop environment. STUX is touted as a live CD distro that can automatically load and save main configuration and personal files on a writable partition.
STUX, which originated in Italy, is based on Slackware 11.0, which was released only about a month ago. It supports KDE and all programs executed from KDE; users now can run it from the live CD as a privileged user or unprivileged user, a team spokesman said.
Key new features and enhancements in v0.9.2, according to the team, include:- Overall, the distro is much more sophisticated
- Added udev, Tor, 3D-Desktop, MPlayer, Icecast, lm_sensors, Lopster, wpa_supplicant
- Now using wireless and network initialization scripts from Alien BO
- All STUX utilities have been reviewed and enhanced
- Boots up faster
- Offers enhanced wireless networking support
There are many other many other changes, fixes and enhancements, the project team said.
Standard features include:- Thunderbird 1.5.0.7 email client
- GIMP 2.2.13 graphics editor
- AbiWord 2.2.9 text editor
- Firefox 1.5.0.7 browser
- MPlayer 1.0pre8 music player
Note: STUX Linux does not come bundled with an office productivity suite.
