openSUSE 10.1 package manager fix due this week
Jul. 19, 2006

"We love openSUSE, but we hate openSUSE's package management problems," Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols, DesktopLinux.com's resident Linux curmudgeon, reports from his vacation. But there's good news: a fix is coming soon, he says.

"OpenSUSE 10.1 has great features and great new programs, but some great honking problems with its package manager, which the administration tool YaST uses for adding new programs and updating old ones," Vaughan-Nichols adds.

In mid-June, Novell released a set of patches that were designed to fix these problems. "They did help, but they still left something to be desired," according to Vaughan-Nichols.

Now, however, Novell and the openSUSE Project appear to have worked out a new set of patches.

According to a Novell senior product manager, "We will probably provide a major update this week -- we're currently in Q&A with this piece."

The update is expected to cover the following:
  • Fixed updating rug.rpm and other packages that "Provide" themselves without edition (#186079)
  • Fixed progress reporting when installing from YUM sources (#182003)
  • Fixes for autorefresh (#186115, #181613, #181182)
  • parse-metadata consumed much memory because of duplicating entries in zmd.db (#187779)
  • Do a media change request for CD or DVD only (#183315)
  • ZENworks automatically subscribes to YUM services (single catalog, #175721)
  • Do not complain if ZMD cannot be stopped (#166900)
  • Handle passwords in URLs (#186978, #186842, #186804)
  • Do not leave stale temporary files (#178292)
  • Handle signing in zen-updater, zmd
  • Fix some bugs in interaction of libzypp and zmd
  • Fix applying of kernel patch to not install kernel-kdump (#191483)
"With all this in place, openSUSE 10.1's update system should finally be the equal of the rest of this impressive distribution," Vaughan-Nichols concludes.

SUSE Linux Enterprise 10 (SLED 10), Novell's recently released enterprise Linux desktop based on openSUSE 10.1, does not appear to have any significant package manager problems.
