Desktop/LX 1.4 starts with KDE 3.2.2. "By focusing on KDE, we were able to closely follow the development cycle. We incorporate some of the latest available technologies in 1.4. Our team has been able to improve the user’s experience with quicker system responsiveness in 1.4. The differences are noticeable to the end user – as an example, quicker boot times and faster rendering.” said vice president of sales, Rus Bayne.
Lycoris is improving the visual experience for consumers. A recent partnership with Bitstream added fonts to Lycoris. In 1.4, Bitstream expands their catalog offerings at Lycoris and delivers better quality fonts on Linux. Bundled packages -- or 'paks'-- of Bitstream fonts are available through Lycoris’ website. New in the release, too, are a set of vivid images for your computer’s background. These are available through an agreement with online firm WallpaperADay. Several new icon groups and themes are available with 1.4.
Beginning with 1.4, the former Redmond Linux makers have changed their naming convention from difficult-to-remember gemstones to a numeric convention that is easier to understand, and demonstrates how far the company's OS has progressed.
Lycoris' Linux platform has long focused on the consumer user and offers specialized versions of Lycoris for handhelds like the Compaq iPaq or Sharp Zaurus and Lycoris TabletPC software that runs on Toshiba and the HP-Compaq Tablet PC.
Desktop/LX 1.4 will include support for more third-party software, add more applications in the Iris Software Gallery and offer additional Lycoris-selected bundles for purchase. The software is based on the newest versions of the Linux kernel, GTK and QT, Mozilla, and the Gimp.
Purchasers of Desktop/LX today get the 1.4 update as soon as it becomes available.
Screenshots of the new release are available here. The Lycoris team plans to update it daily as general availability nears.
