| Security-oriented Linux live CD achieves major release |
Mar. 10, 2007
The Switzerland-based Remote-Exploit.org project team earlier this week announced the release of BackTrack 2.0, a SLAX-based live CD with a comprehensive collection of security and forensics tools. The distribution features a 2.6.20 Linux kernel (with several patches) and the KDE desktop environment.
BackTrack was created by merging Auditor Security Linux with WHAX (formerly Whoppix), the project team said. The project's website describes BackTrack as the most highly-rated live CD Linux distribution "focused on penetration testing," and claims that "No other commercial or freely available analysis platform offers an equivalent level of usability with automatic configuration and focus on penetration testing."
"With no installation whatsoever, the analysis platform is started directly from the CD-ROM and is fully accessible within minutes," the project's website states.
New features in BackTrack 2, as listed by the project team, include:- Updated kernel 2.6.20 with several patches
- Broadcom-based wireless card support
- Most wireless drivers are built to support raw packet injection
- Metasploit2 and Metasploit3 framework integration
- Alignment to open standards and frameworks like ISSAF and OSSTMM
- Redesigned menu structure to assist the novice as well as the professional
- Japanese input support - reading and writing in Hiragana, Katakana, and Kanji
Standard features include:- Firefox 1.5.0.7 browser
- MySQL 5.0.24a database
- Mplayer 1.0rc1 media player
- PostGreSQL 8.1.4 database
- Mono, Python, Perl, qt-x11 development platforms
