Mint Linux mints new distro release
Sep. 08, 2008

Free software teetotalers may be interested in a new radio interview with Richard M. Stallman. Meanwhile, those willing to intermingle free and proprietary bits can rejoice in the release of version 5.0 of Linux Mint, aimed at creating a more multimedia-rich, consumer-friendly version of Ubuntu.

Linux Mint 5.0 ("Elyssa") will eventually be available with the Fluxbox window manager, with a full KDE desktop, or pre-compiled for 64-bit hardware. For now, though, the release is available in a lightweight flavor suitable for older hardware, thanks to its use of the ultra-lightweight XFCE window manager. At the same time, the release features the option of fancy Compiz desktop graphics, for those who like eye candy.

Other touted features include:
  • Faster server mirrors
  • Several translations, with more expected
  • Support for "PrtScn" keyboard buttons
  • Color term, with fortune output attributed to the ascii art option of your choice
  • Lower memory requirements for MintUpdate and Mozilla
  • Several new UI conveniences (open folder as root, easy iso MD5 checking, easy TrueType font installation)
  • 2.6.24 kernel with the interesting "Completely Fair Scheduler"
  • Lots of upstream Ubuntu improvements
  • Prettier graphical desktop widgets
  • CNR support, an online software portal, and repository changes
  • A new backup utility
  • An updated "EnvyNG" tool for dealing with proprietary device drivers
Availability

Linux Mint 5.0 can be downloaded now, here. However, the more idealistic may prefer to download Richard M. Stallman's interview (be sure to select the freer "ogg" option, rather than "mp3"), here.
