| Novell continues to contribute, commit to Open Source |
Apr. 28, 2005
First Ximian, then SuSE Linux, Evolution Connector and Hula. Now Allison and JEMS. eWEEK.com's Darryl K. Taft explains how Novell Inc continues to increase its commitment to Open Source.
Novell begins by adding Samba co-author Jeremy Allison to its team. At Novell, Allison will continue to focus on file sharing -- Novell's "bread and butter", according to eWeek's Taft -- but will also help Ximian co-founder and former CTO Miguel de Icaza (now Novell's VP of developer platforms) "evangelize Novell's open-source story."
And what a story.
Not only is Novell ditching the proprietary SilverStream application server -- their own product -- in favor of Jboss Inc.'s open source Jboss Enterprise Middleware System (JEMS), Novell is also opening up some of its code.
Novell has already contributed some 200,000 lines of its NetMail server code to Hula, an open source collaboration server. Also, Taft says parts of eDirectory (an LDAP identity management system, a competing product to Microsoft's Active Directory) will also go open source. And more, Allison's contract terms allow him to release all his work done at Novell.
Novell also anticipates growth in the desktop market, particularly in Europe. "We're on the cusp of widespread adoption by customers," says Carl Drisko, Novell's head of Linux and open-source services. "Including governments and corporate entities like call centers."
