Panda Software has announced a freely downloadable beta release of its anti-malware, firewall, and intrusion-prevention software for Linux. DesktopSecure also addresses buffer overflow and privilege escalation vulnerabilities, the company said.
DesktopSecure for Linux has a GUI management interface and can be installed on most distributions, according to the company. The product also includes an enhanced firewall for workstations and an intrusion prevention system to guard against network threats, such as worms.
Bilbao, Spain-based Panda said it will offer additional support for Red Hat, Novell SUSE, Debian, and Fedora distributions in its corporate version.
Increased attention is being put on security for Linux systems in recent months. Last week at the RSA Security Conference, both Red Hat and Novell announced that they were bolstering security for their desktops -- mainly through improved authentication systems.
The Panda DesktopSecure for Linux beta can be downloaded free of charge here. The company said the final version will also be made available at no cost to home users.
