| Dell laptops pre-loaded with Mandriva Linux available in France |

Computer buyers interested in obtaining a pre-loaded Mandriva Linux laptop from a mainstream manufacturer (Dell) can now do so, but they have to buy it through a French sales outlet, reports Steven J. Vaughan Nichols in eWEEK.com.
"This is the first time any Dell laptop with pre-installed Linux has been sold or supported by Dell," Vaughn-Nichols writes. "Previously, only Dell N-Series Precision Workstations with Red Hat Linux were available from Dell."
The Linux-powered notebook is Dell's Latitude 110L. It comes in a variety of configurations ranging from a 1.4GHz to 1.7GHz mobile Celeron or Pentium M CPU, and 256MB to 1,280MB of RAM. The system also includes a DVD Drive and 802.11g Wi-Fi.
Dell also supplies lower-end desktop computers pre-loaded with Linspire 4.5 through its Questar sales channel partner in Italy, but the Dallas-based computer maker doesn't advertise it.
Other organizations are pre-loading Linux on Dell laptops for specific purposes. In Canada, for example, Acadia University recently selected the Xandros Desktop Operating System as the Linux offering for its undergraduate program. The Nova Scotia-based facility, credited as the first university in Canada to integrate notebook computers into the curriculum, is offering a customized version of Xandros on Dell D600 laptops through a three-year program that is expected to outfit 9,000 laptops to students and faculty.
