| Newly released MEPISLite 3.3.1 aims to ease Win98-to-Linux migration |
Jun. 06, 2005
The MEPIS community asked for an "easy migration path from Windows 98," and this week MEPIS LLC delivered with MEPISLite 3.3.1 -- a lightweight version of SimplyMEPIS 3.3.1 optimized for "modest hardware." To run gently on older machines, MEPISLite includes skinnier packages and a number of tweaks to minimize "disk thrashing."
As lead developer Warren Woodford hoped during testing, MEPISLite also proved a good vehicle for the development of the MEPIS Traveller Disc, which lets users keep a copy of their home directory on a USB Key or similar device -- to make backups, or for keeping multiple machines in sync.
MEPIS LLC partner Technalign now offers MEPISLite 3.3.1 with the Traveller Disc feature as part of its TaFusion ON THE GO MEPIS Linux Version XI boxed product for $24.95 through its online store. A trial version, selling for $2.99, is also available.
