| Vendors team on Windows to Linux migration approach |
Aug. 08, 2005
Three desktop Linux companies are partnering to offer a hardware/software approach that aims to enable organizations large and small to cost-effectively leverage the Linux desktop. The marketing collaboration results in "a complete pathway to migrate enterprises to desktop Linux, a feat no single company has yet matched," the companies said in a joint statement.
The three companies' contributions to the joint marketing effort include: - Userful's Desktop Multiplier software, said to turn one computer into 10 using additional video cards, thereby enabling organizations to deploy Linux desktops to realize TCO savings by maintaining fewer computers.
- Alacos's Desktop Migration Agent software, said to enable organizations to transfer settings and application data from Windows desktops to Linux in order to minimize employee downtime during migrations.
- Win4Lin Inc's Win4Lin, said to enable users to seamlessly use Windows applications in Linux desktop environments, the company said. These environments include Userful's Desktop Multiplier, Desktop Server, and DiscoverStation.
The three companies are now cooperatively offering their combined software through both retail and partner channels. They will demonstrate the products, combined and individually, at LinuxWorld San Francisco 2005 Exhibit Hall Booth #138 from Aug. 9-11.
