| Fedora spins latest Core live optical disks |
Aug. 30, 2006
Red Hat Fedora Unity team member and distro maintainer Robert Jensen on Aug. 30 announced the availability of a new set of Fedora Core live CDs and DVDs, which all utilize the GNOME desktop and a 2.6.17 Linux kernel.
Called Live-Spins and created with a tool called Kadischi, the new live CD/DVD images allow users to test the distribution without having to install it to a hard disk.
Fedora released the plastic platters for both the current stable version (Fedora Core 5) and the latest development build (Fedora Core 6 Test 2), according to Jensen.
Key standard features of the current Fedora build are many, but here are some of the highlights, as listed by the project team:- OpenOffice.org 2.04 office suite (this version wasn't yet available on the OO.org site Aug. 30)
- Nautilus 2.15.92.1 file manager
- GIMP 2.2.13 graphics editor
- Firefox 1.5.0.6 browser
- SendMail 8.13.7 mail client
- Thunderbird 1.5.0.5 email and messaging client
- MySQL 5.0.22 database server
The Fedora Project produces time-based releases of Fedora Core about two to three times a year, with a public release schedule.
The live CD/DVD images can be downloaded via BitTorrent here. The 653MB stable FC-5 live CD torrent iso can be obtained here, and the developmental FC-6T2 CD/DVD image (661MB) can be downloaded here.
