| Free Mandriva live CD includes 3D Metisse desktop |
Jan. 30, 2007
Mandriva, which introduced Mandriva One 2007 last October, has just released a live CD version of it, complete with a 3D desktop environment. Mandriva 2007, based on a 2.6.17 Linux kernel, uses KDE as a default desktop but also supports both the GNOME and Xfce environments.
"Metisse is a window manager developed by the In Situ project," a company spokesperson said. "Available under the General Public License exclusively for Linux, Metisse differs from a classic 3D desktop ("the cube") in the way that it offers innovative windows interactions, thus enforcing work efficiency."
The key new ingredient within both the original Mandriva Linux 2007 boxed edition and the newly downloadable "Metisse edition" is the AIGLX and Xgl 3D-accelerated desktop, according to the spokesperson. The Metisse edition originally was released exclusively to members of the Mandriva Club.
Mandriva, with its generous supply of application packages, is one of the most complete Linux distributions available. New and/or updated features in Mandriva Linux 2007, according to the company, include:- GIMP 2.3.12 graphics editor
- SeaMonkey 1.0.7 web application suite
- Thunderbird 1.5.0.9 email client
- PostgreSQL 8.2.1 database
- OpenOffice.org 2.0.3 office suite
- Mplayer 1.0 media player
- GAIM 2.0.0 messenger
- Abiword 2.4.6 text editor
Mandriva One 2007 supports KOffice, GNOME Office and OpenOffice.org productivity suites.
