| Linspire's CNR beta supports Ubuntu HardyHeron |
Apr. 16, 2008
Linspire announced a new version of its CNR (Click'N'Run) software management system that supports the Ubuntu 8.04 ("HardyHeron") release, expected to take flight on Apr. 24. The client enables users to install, uninstall, and update desktop Linux software available on Linspire's CNR.com download site.
Additionally, Linspire says it plans on releasing CNR clients for Debian, Fedora, and OpenSUSE in the "near future."
Linspire launched CNR.com in 2002 with the aim of allowing desktop Linux users to find, install, uninstall, manage, and update thousands of software programs on their Linspire-based Linux computers. The site includes dozens of commercial Linux software titles for sale, such as Sun Microsystems' StarOffice, Parallels Workstation, Virtual Bridges' Win4Lin, CodeWeavers' CrossOver Office, and TransGaming Technologies' Cedega.
In December, Linspire announced the arrival of the CNR client beta, which provided support for its Ubuntu-based Freespire 2.0 (community) and Linspire 6.0 (commercial) desktop Linux distributions, as well as for Ubuntu 7.04 and 7.10. The new version supports the long term support (LTS) Linux distribution edition of Ubuntu 8.04, which has only recently entered beta.
Compared to the earlier proprietary version of CNR, the new version is open source and far more lightweight, says Linspire, with 99 percent of the processing chores performed on the server. The CNR client presents users with the site's catalog of Linux and web-based applications, offering search by title, popularity, user rating, category, and function. The client provides automatic download and installation of dependency programs, and lets users add and edit software product pages, contributing new screenshots, user reviews, ratings, descriptions, categorizations, and release notes.
Stated Larry Kettler, President and CEO of Linspire, "Since the launch of our new beta CNR.com service, Feisty and Gusty users have made up an important part of the CNR user base. We look forward to continuing this growth with Hardy users, as well as adding other popular desktop Linux distributions to CNR.com in the future."
The beta CNR Client for Ubuntu 7.04, 7.10 and 8.04 is available now for free download at the CNR.com site, here.
