| Open source financial apps offer alternatives to Quicken, Money |
Nov. 09, 2005
Most PC users are familiar with Intuit Quicken and Microsoft Money, two popular Windows-based applications for personal financial management. But Linux.com's Jem Matzan reminds us that Linux users have some highly capable open-source alternatives to these, and they're just a few clicks away.
"GNU/Linux offers several similar applications -- most of them free software -- that can meet or exceed the capabilities of the proprietary programs," Maztan writes. "If you can adjust to a different interface, you might find you like one of them more than the better-known alternatives."
Matzan describes the pros and cons of Moneydance (Reilly Technologies), GPL-licensed jGnash, KMyMoney, GnuCash, and CrossOver Office.
So, as we get near the end of tax year 2005, you might want to consider trying a different financial tool or two.
