| What's up with the annual Desktop Linux Summit? |
Jan. 17, 2007
Analysis -- Some folks who like to plan ahead are wondering if Linspire is going to host its Desktop Linux Summit this spring in San Diego, as it has for the past four years. It looks like we'll have to wait a bit longer to find out.
By many accounts, last year's April confab at the Manchester Grand Hyatt was a big success, with nearly 1,000 participants causing a few standing-room-only crowds at some presentations.
Author Geoffrey Moore ("Crossing the Chasm," "Dealing with Darwin") and outspoken pro-Microsoft analyst Rob Enderle were among the guest speakers.
Linspire CEO Kevin Carmony, who introduced Freespire -- a no-cost version of Linspire's Linux distribution -- in his keynote address at last year's Summit, gave DesktopLinux.com the scoop on what's happening with this year's event.
It's not scheduled yet, Carmony revealed.
"Yes, last year's DLS was great," Carmony wrote via email.
Carmony continued: "Last year, right before DLS, IBM approached us about creating a 'governing board' for DLS, made up of several of the key players, Red Hat, Novell, Linspire, Canonical, Intel, HP, etc. The idea was to help kill, once and for all, the notion that DLS was a 'Linspire event.'"
"IBM has had countless meetings, calls, etc. to try and make this happen, but typical of 'committees,' they move slowly and there haven't yet been made any firm determination. If this broader group doesn't take it up and run with it, that means once again it will be up to Linspire to pull this off, and we'll have to decide when and where would be the best time and place for DLS."
"Unfortunately, that's about all I can say for now, but we do plan on making a formal announcement early next month what will be happening with DLS," concluded Carmony.
So, the word is this: Sit tight, and DesktopLinux.com will try to break the news on this year's Deskop Linux Summit as soon as possible.
