| "I'm Linux" contest open for video entries |
Jan. 12, 2009
The Linux Foundation (LF) is now accepting 60-second video entries for its "I'm Linux" contest, which spoofs recent Apple and Microsoft commercials. The winner will receive a free trip to Tokyo to participate in the LF's Japan Linux Symposium in October 2009, says the nonprofit group.
As reported earlier, the "I'm Linux" contest asks contestants to help create Linux's riposte to the "I'm a Mac" ads from Apple and "I'm a PC" ads from Microsoft. According to the LF contest website, "While the Linux Foundation would love to spend millions promoting Linux on TV, it's simply not our style (or in our budget)." Instead, says the group, it was decided that a community video contest would be more fitting to the spirit of open source.
Contestants must be 18 and over, and entries must be no longer than 60 seconds and posted no later than March 15, says the LF. They must also meet posted terms of service covering IP rights and offensive content. Multiple entries are allowed, as are company-sponsored entries, although only a single individual receives the trip to Japan, which includes a three-night stay at a hotel.
The videos should show why the contestant loves Linux, says the LF. Humor is recommended, although not required, and the videos do not need to parody the Apple and Microsoft commercials. A panel of LF judges will rate each entry's originality, clarity of message, and "how much it inspires others to use Linux." The judges will also "take into account" community votes on the contest website, such as number of favorites and starred voting. Voting appears to be open to all.
