| Maryland library migrates to Linux kiosks, cuts costs |

At NewsForge, Joe Barr takes examines the migration to Linux at Maryland's Howard County Public Library (HCPL). The library's 200 public kiosks run a customized version of Linux called Lumix that includes the Gnome desktop environment, the Mozilla browser and OpenOffice.org. According to IT staffers library patrons and employees found the move to be "almost transparent." Management, too, has been pleased with the significant cost savings on new hardware and administration costs, using the surplus "to add another 20 new PCs before the end of the fiscal year."
