Transgaming uncorks new WineX 4.0 -- renamed Cedega |
Jun. 22, 2004
Canadian Linux gaming software vendor TransGaming Technologies today unveiled version 4.0 of the company's WineX software -- and renamed the product Cedega. Like previous versions of WineX, the newly minted Cedega allows Windows games to transparently run on Linux PCs right out-of-the-box.
With the latest release, TransGaming's software is now said to run over 300 of the latest Windows-compatible gaming titles on Linux PCs. Some hits now supported include EA's Battlefield Vietnam, Eidos's Hitman: Contracts, and LucasArts's Star Wars Galaxies.
Multiplayer games now work with Cedega too, including NCSoft's recently released online game, City of Heroes. Upcoming release, Worlds of WarCraft from Blizzard Entertainment will also be supported when it becomes available.
Explaining the new name, TransGaming says that the software named after a grape used to "make some of the finest Port wines in the world." The software was originally an extension, or fork, of the open source Wine project that enables Windows programs to run on Linux.
Cedega 4.0 includes support for Microsoft DirectX 9.0 technology that enables rich in multimedia elements such as full-color graphics, video, 3D animation, and rich audio. TransGaming's Co-CEO and CTO Gavriel State said that the software "also includes a new advanced inter-process communication architecture that can double the speed of games which make heavy use of Win32 kernel synchronization primitives."
TransGaming also announced a push into Europe with the release of Cedega. The software supports English, Dutch, Danish, Portuguese, and German languages, and boasts an updated Point2Play interface.
