| New B2D live CD release supports traditional Chinese |
Dec. 28, 2006
A new stable release of B2D Linux, a Taiwanese live CD desktop distribution based on Knoppix, was released this week, featuring a 2.6.18 kernel and the KDE desktop environment. B2D is developed in Taiwan, with user environment and read/write support for traditional Chinese only.
The most important change is the addition of the lightweight LXDE desktop, which can be selected as an alternative environment after booting, alongside the default KDE and the optional GNOME.
Other changes, according to the project team, include: - removed the proprietary NVIDIA kernel module, added NdisWrapper;
- removed StarDict;
- solved the problem with multiple programs accessing the audio device and other bug fixes;
- added Kdenlive video editor, KlamAV front-end for ClamAV anti-virus scanner, Cheops graphical utility for managing network connections;
- updated some packages available for installation with Klik (OpenOffice.org 2.0.4, Java Development Kit 6, Sodipodi and Songbird).
Standard features, according to the team, include:- GAIM 2.0.0beta4 messenger
- GIMP 2.2.13 graphics editor
- Mplayer 1.0pre8 media player
- MySQL 5.0.24a database
- Firefox 1.5.0.7 browser
Due to space restrictions, some applications -- notably OpenOffice.org, Nvu, and Mozilla Thunderbird -- had to be left out from the CD, the team said. However, those -- plus many other apps -- can be installed through the Klik infrastructure, the team added. Further details are on the project's website.
