SuSE Linux 9.1 now available for download
Jun. 04, 2004

SuSE's 9.1 release is now available for free download from the company's FTP server. While the release is similar in function to the packaged version sold through retail outlets, a few program packages have been excluded from the freely available version due to license restrictions. Installation support is not available for free with the download, however SuSE does offer an incident-based program for users.

SuSE has received a positive reception since Novell released the software in May. The complete version of SuSE 9.1 is available for purchase from SuSE for US $90 and includes five CDs and two double-sided DVDs (one for 32-bit processors, the other for 64-bit processors). An upgrade from previous SuSE Linux products is available for US $60. The boxed version contains more than 2,500 open-source packages and support options are available with purchase. As promised, Novell is also now shipping a US $30 personal version.

SuSE Linux 9.1 also performs well on laptops. DesktopLinux.com founder and editor-in-chief Rick Lehrbaum reports that he has used SuSE Linux on his Sony VAIO PCG-FXA59 laptop (as his desktop system) for the past year, beginning with version 8.2. Lehrbaum migrated to a pre-release version of SuSE 9.1 Professional two months ago, and is currently using the final "Gold" version.

"The CD-based installer is clean, efficient, easy-to-use, and works beautifully," Lehrbaum says. "The latest linux kernel, KDE, YaST2, GIMP -- and everything else SuSE includes are all worth the upgrade. And thanks to the improved performance of linux kernel 2.6, I can rip CDs while playing MP3s without any skipping." Lehrbaum also has high praise for the SuSE online update service, which he uses to keep his system up-to-date with the latest security patches and bug fixes. He also appreciates the way SuSEplugger "automagically" recognizes and installs USB devices that he plugs in, while the system is running.
