| Opera 8 ahead in "browser innovation," reviewer says |
Apr. 26, 2005
Microsoft Corp. and the Mozilla Foundation now dominate the market, but Opera Software ASA -- the first to offer cookie management and tabbed browsing -- steps onto the track again with the newly released Opera 8, and proves it's still the lead innovator, according to eWeek.com's Jim Rapoza.
Unlike other reviewers, Rapoza has few complaints about Opera 8 -- some webpages did not display properly, and the browser was not compatible with sites that required Windows authentication.
Rapoza reports that Opera 8 ran well on eWeek's test machines, and that the reviewers found the new browser's user interface clean, friendly, and intuitive. The security enhancements seem to depend primarily on keeping the user informed with detailed facts in the easy-to-access security bar, though Opera 8's whitelist feature does actively minimize spoofing and phishing attacks, he notes.
Opera 8's much-boasted automatic fit-to-screen width feature pleased eWeek.com reviewers, as did the new trash can (a utility that stores blocked pop-ups and closed pages for future reference), which Rapoza praised as the "coolest" and "most useful" of Opera 8's innovations.
