| Linux Mint 3.0 beta sports latest Ubuntu features |
May 10, 2007
The Linux Mint team on May 9 released the first beta of Linux Mint 3.0, code-named "Cassandra" and utilizing a 2.6.20 kernel for improved hardware support. The Ubuntu-based distribution also sports a GNOME 2.18 default desktop and several Ubuntu "Fiesty Fawn" innovations, the team said.
"This is the first beta release of Cassandra. The system is stable, but some work is ongoing in 'mintinstall', 'mintmenu' and in the artwork. For this reason, this is not considered a release candidate," team spokesperson Clement Lefebvre said.
Important new features, according to the team, include: - GNOME 2.18 offers speed improvements
- Ubuntu "Feisty Fawn" innovations (restricted manager, desktop effects, Windows migration assistant, Avahi)
- OpenOffice.org 2.2
- Thunderbird replaces Evolution as the default email reader
- GIMP now installed by default
- GNOME Control Center replaces mintConfig as the default control center application
- drag & drop support in mintMenu with many other improvements
- Sun Java 6 replaces Sun Java 5
- Compiz, Beryl, and Emerald installed by default
Linux Mint's goal is to provide a more complete out-of-the-box experience by including browser plug-ins, media codecs, support for DVD playback, Java, and other components, the team said on the distro website. It is compatible with Ubuntu software repositories.
The Ubuntu-based distro also offers a pair of GNOME versions: a "full edition" (684 MB) and a "light edition" (620 MB). Unlike the GNOME versions, which fit on live/install CDs, the new KDE version, at 808 MB size, requires the added space of a DVD optical disc.
You can download the DVD ISO image from the main Linux Mint site here. Alternatively, you can link directly to the ISO image file (700MB) here (direct file download).
