Aug. 04, 2004
At LinuxWorld, HP has launched a Linux-based notebook computer targeting business users in North America. The Compaq nx5000 is now available with Novell's SuSE Linux 9.1 and OpenOffice.org preinstalled by HP. Customers can choose from two CPUs, a 1.2GHz Celeron or a 1.8GHz Pentium M. The computer supports up to 2GB of 266MHz DDR SDRAM, and is offered with 30-80GB of hard drive.
In his keynote at the San Francisco event, VP of Linux Martin Fink said that the new unit will be a "test" launch from which the company will gauge demand for products with open source software preinstalled. In addition to SuSE Linux 9.1, the nx5000 is also offered with Microsoft Windows XP Pro, Home, or Windows 2000.
HP introduced a low-cost notebook in May 2003 as part of a Thai government computer initiative. The laptop, with government subsidies, retailed for 19,500 Baht (US$458). System specifications: 800 MHz Intel Celeron processor, 128MB of RAM and a 20GB hard drive. Linux TLE, the Thai-language version of the Linux operating system, came pre-installed.
Pricing on the new North American HP Linux laptops starts at US $1140.
