| Ubuntu enterprise version due June 1st |
Mar. 22, 2006
Ubuntu founder and chief developer Mark Shuttleworth Monday confirmed the release date for Ubuntu "Dapper Drake" enterprise-quality desktop and server editions as June 1st -- about six weeks later than had been planned. Ubuntu is well known for its predictable, every-six-month version releases.
Dapper Drake, positioned as the distro's first "enterprise quality" release, will be the first Ubuntu version to have increased support commitments: 36 months for the desktop versions and 60 months for servers, as compared to 18 months for the current 5.10 "Breezy Badger" version. Lack of longer-term support commitments in newer distros such as Ubuntu has been a hindrance for many businesses considering moving from Unix or Windows to Ubuntu, Gartner Group and other analysts have reported.
Shuttleworth wrote in an email to the Ubuntu community list that the extra time will be devoted to quality assurance, Asian language support, and "polish" for the user interface. The XFCE desktop also will be integrated into the main repository for users wanting a fast and light desktop, he added.
During the extra time, Shuttleworth said he also hopes to get Dapper certified to the requirements of the Linux Standards Base (LSB).
"In some senses Dapper is a 'first' for us, in that it is the first 'enterprise quality' release of Ubuntu, for which we plan to offer support for a very long time. I, and others, would very much like Dapper to stand proud amongst the traditional enterprise Linux releases from Red Hat, Debian, and SUSE as an equal match on quality, support, and presentation," Shuttleworth wrote in an earlier email.
Alpha 5 (also referred to as "Flight CD") of the Ubuntu, Kubuntu, and Edubuntu 6.04 "Dapper Drake" version was released March 13. You can read about the details of this most recent Ubuntu version here.
You can download the live Ubuntu CD (585 MB) here.
As always, the Ubuntu, Kubuntu, and Edubuntu live and installation ISO images, as well as BitTorrent files for the three supported architectures, are available from the project's download server.
