Marking the release of the GNOME 2.4 desktop today, Ars Technica features an in-depth profile of new technologies and improvements found in this mature Linux desktop. An improved multimedia framework, stablility, and the debut of the Epiphany web browser are all key reasons to hold this release up to more established desktop operating systems.
Says Ars Technica, "GNOME 2.4 brings to the Linux desktop considerable polish, accessibility and consistency. This release is a culmination of the work done by commercial vendors and the GNOME community, as evidenced by the fact that three vendors--Sun, Red Hat and Ximian--have already shipped desktops focused on the GNOME 2 platform.
