Grasshopper has released a version of its latest desktop publishing software for Linux. PageStream 5.0, available in standard and professional versions, runs on x86 Linux installations having Gnome+2.0/GTK+2.0 packages (or newer) along with at least 30MB of hard drive space.
New features in PageStream 5.0 are said to include picture transparency, alpha blending, text window and orphan control, hanging bullets, dropcaps, and the ability to print to bitmap picture. Additionally, the professional version enables users to place PDF Objects, exports objects as bitmaps, automatically adjusts text width for page justification, and allows gradient and radial masks for pictures/EPS/PDF.
Linux has other desktop publishing software options, including the German-inspired Scribus open source project. Scribus, like Pagestream, is similar to commercial applications such as Adobe PageMaker or QuarkXPress. Scribus supports professional publishing features, such as CMYK color, easy PDF creation, Encapsulated Postscript import/export, and color separations for high end graphics.
PageStream 5.0 for first time buyers is available now for US $99, with additional copies priced at $50. A limited function demo version is available for free download here.
