| Mandriva Linux 2006 available for net-install |
Oct. 13, 2005
Mandriva Linux (formerly Mandrake Linux) Thursday released the 2006 version of its operating system. The new version of the company's flagship product merges pioneer technologies from Conectiva and Lycoris, as well as spanning for the first time a one-year release cycle, Mandriva said.
Mandriva 2006 satisfies a broad array of computing requirements, including office, multimedia, Internet, and servers. Additionally, the company claims it is the only Linux distribution to provide the official support for Intel Centrino mobile systems and to offer a complete integration of Skype, which makes it possible for anyone worldwide to make free high-quality phone calls via the Internet.
Mandriva 2006's key new features are said to include:- Kat desktop search tool
- Interactive firewall
- Official support for the Intel Centrino mobile technology
- Full integration of Skype, the popular free voice calling over Internet software
- Auto-installation server
- Smart package manager
- Integration of Conectiva's and Lycoris's technologies
The Kat desktop search tool allows users to track down information not only in file names but also in the content of the files. This provides a powerful means to being permanently able to find important data on one's computer, even many months or years after having created a document, Mandriva said.
The interactive firewall lets users get real-time information on any malicious actions being performed against their system. Unlike a typical firewall, which is based on fixed rules, the interactive version lets users constantly adapt the rules depending on the actual status of the computer, Madriva said.
Mandriva 2006 includes the following core applications:- OpenOffice.org, an MS Office-compatible office suite
- Mozilla Firefox, Web browser
- Kopete, for instant messaging
- Kontact, for email management
- The GIMP, image creation and manipulation
- Amarok, for playing and managing digital music
Each edition of Mandriva Linux 2006 is available for both 32-bit and 64-bit platforms. In addition to an extensive choice of software, all 2006 official versions come with many pre-packaged commercial plugins such as Flash and Java players, NVIDIA and ATI drivers, and many others.
"When you think of desktop Linux, Mandriva really is the reference platform. With the integration of Lycoris technology, you'll be hard pressed to find a system that surpasses the ease of use and the attractive interface of Discovery/Lx," said Joseph Cheek, founder of Lycoris.
The 2006 x86-32 and x86-64 install trees are now available on the mirrors and provide many new features.
Mandriva 2006 is available in three editions: Discovery/Lx (for the Linux beginner), PowerPack (for the advanced computer user) and PowerPack+ (for SOHO users). Mandriva Club members and Mandriva official contributors can already download the software. Mandriva 2006 is now available for pre-order at the Mandriva Store.
CD/DVD ISO images are not ready yet. In order to install, users need to download the floppy or the CD image from the install directory and proceed with a network install. Following that, it's possible to install more than 12,000 application packages online, the French-based company said.
