Linspire Linux continues multi-language push
Dec. 06, 2006

Linspire Inc., which on Nov. 28 introduced a French-language version of its popular commercial Linux operating system, today announced the immediate digital availability of Linspire 5 in four other languages: German, Dutch, Espanol, and Standard English (UK).

The San Diego-based company is a primary sponsor of the IRMA (International Resource Management Application) project, a community-based desktop Linux localization initiative that contributed translation work to the development of the new language versions -- along with support from Linspire translation specialists and strategic partners.

According to Linspire, the translations have resulted from the combined efforts of the company's engineers, its strategic partners, and open source community volunteers who have translated both the operating system and key applications through the use of the IRMA project's web-based translating application. Thousands of strings of code that make up the complete Linspire operating system were translated and then checked, edited and filtered to create these versions of Linspire 5, Linspire says.

Linspire CEO Kevin Carmony stated, "The open source community is helping lift roadblocks to desktop Linux adoption by working together to bring Linspire's ease of use to computer users all over the world in their native language. Linspire prides itself on our ease of use, and certainly having everything localized in a user's language is vital to usability."

Carmony said that Linspire plans to "continue to deliver languages for our customers around the globe as they switch to desktop Linux," several additional languages expected to be added "over the next several months...
as we continue with more localized offerings for both Linspire and Freespire."

Availability

The digital versions of Linspire in all the languages mentioned above are available immediately for download on the the company's website, here.

The standard price for Linspire 5 is $49.95. However, until January 1, the newly translated versions are available for $26.25, using the following coupon code: "LinspireLanguages."

In addition, system builders interested in the version of Linspire in one of these languages can sign up for free at the Linspire Builder Partner Program, here, and gain access to Linspire in several languages.
