CentOS Linux v3.8 debuts
Aug. 25, 2006

CentOS Distro maintainer Johnny Hughes on Aug. 25 announced the release of the eighth update to the legacy CentOS 3 series, available for both i386 and x86_64 architectures, and featuring a choice of either the GNOME or KDE desktops running on a 2.4.21 kernel.

"This release corresponds to the upstream vendor U8 release together with updates through August 11th (depending on architecture)," Hughes said in the release announcement. "The work for the other architectures (CentOS v2.x and v4.x) is still in progress."

Key features include:
  • Native Posix Thread Library
  • GNOME 2.2.2
  • KDE 3.1.3
  • MySQL 3.23.58
  • PostgreSQL 7.3.10
  • Apache 2.0.46
  • OpenOffice.org 1.1.2
  • Samba 3
CentOS is touted as a "100 percent-compatible" open-source rebuild of Red Hat Enterprise Linux, in full compliance with Red Hat's redistribution requirements. CentOS is for people who need an enterprise class operating system stability without the cost of certification and support, the project says.

CentOS 3.8 offers a Single Server CD iso (i386 and x86_64 only). This CD contains a subset of packages used for most server installs on a single CD for installation. It can be a time saver (one iso instead of four for download). The latest Single Server CD is available here.

The complete CD image sets, DVD torrent files, and single-CD server editions are available from these mirrors.
