Nov. 27, 2002
A new company, 91:E computers has entered the market with Linux-based PCs -- preloaded with Xandros Desktop 1.0.
Peter M. Garriott, 91:E's Founder told DesktopLinux.com that he founded the new company to give people the choice of a stable computer system. "I started this company to give people the opportunity to break away from the monopolistic chain of operating systems. I believe that Xandros is one of the keys to bringing value and performance to consumers at a fair price."
So what's in a name? Garriott told us, "When I was coming up with the name 91:E, I wanted it to have something to do with Linux and electronics. Since Linus Torvalds began Linux in 1991, I adopted that year and an 'E' for electronics."
91:E's computers range from an entry level model for $747 model that includes an AMD Athlon 1800+/ 20 Gig hard-drive/128 MB DDR/ 48x12x48x CD-RW or 16x DVD. 91:E's higher end model is priced at just $1,100 model that hosts an AMD Athlon 2400+ /80 Gig hard-drive/ 512 MB DDR/48x12x48x CD-RW and 16x DVD. Xandros 1.0 comes with a thirty day installation support via e-mail plus a 250-page manual. 91:E's computers come with a manual for setting up your desktop and a one year limited warranty.
91:E is working exclusively with Xandros. There are no plans to work with other Linux-based distros right now but Garriott does not rule that out for the future. The company is just a few days old.
