| MEPIS announces final test iteration of v3.3.2 |
Aug. 29, 2005
MEPIS LLC announced that SimplyMEPIS 3.3.2.test03, expected to be the last test release of version 3.3.2, is now available for download. Lead developer Warren Woodford said the final iteration is expected to be publicly available in one to two weeks.
MEPIS 3.3.2 is an interm release to introduce Desktop OnTheGo and a new kernel (2.6.12.5, from 2.6), as well as to update application packages, Woodford said. The next planned major release of SimplyMEPIS is 3.4, which will be available about one month after KDE 3.4, Xorg 6.8.x, and OOo 2.0 enter the Debian unstable pool, he added.
To achieve stability and allow a release at this time, some major changes have taken place since test02 besides the kernel upgrade, according to Woodford. The dsdt patch has been removed, and the acpi patch has been changed to an older version. The code base also has been changed back to the July 10 Debian unstable pool snapshot.
Woodford also noted that SMP kernels for Intel Pentium 4 and AMD K6 processor will be released soon, and that this release includes Acrobat Reader 7.0.1, which contains a security patch. Additionally, the new Acrobat debian package will soon be available at the MEPIS pool, Woodford said.
Other new features in 3.3.2 include built-in software RAID and dmcrypt support, but the configuration files must be edited manually, according to Woodford. For the time being, SimplyMEPIS is retaining legacy support for running the Traveller Disc, but the Traveller utilities have been removed form the MEPIS OS Center. Desktop OnTheGo is a completely redesigned successor to the MEPIS Traveller Disc, he explained. With Desktop OnTheGo, users can take their desktops everywhere a compatible version of Linux is available, including running from CD, Woodford said.
SimplyMEPIS 3.3.2.test03 can be found in the testing subdirectory at the MEPIS Subscriber's Site and public mirrors. For up to 30 days, feedback comments are encouraged -- email them to dev@mepis.org.
