Scalix: Linux Administrator’s Guide is written for Linux administrators who want to install, configure, and administer either the the free open-source Community Edition or the commercial Enterprise Edition versions of the Scalix Collaboration Platform email and groupware server. Scalix was founded by Julie Hanna Farris in 2002, and acquired last year by Xandros. The company is said to have more than 1 million mailboxes deployed worldwide, with over 675 corporate customers deployed in 55 countries.

Topics covered in the book include:
  • Install, upgrade, and configure Scalix
  • Work with the Scalix Administration Console
  • Manage users and tasks
  • Deploy Scalix connector for Outlook and integrate IMAP clients
  • Monitor Scalix
  • Secure a server using firewalls, stunnel, and OpenVPN
  • Backup and restore a Scalix mail server
  • Integrate an external LDAP directory and configure Scalix LDAP server
  • High-availability and multi-server setups
The freely available Chapter Five, called "First Steps with Scalix Admin Console and Scalix Web Access," starts off with a short tour of SAC, which is the central point of administration for the Scalix server. Feilner moves on to tasks including managing users, groups, and resources, and changing passwords. He then explains how to add users, including selecting the type of user, such as Premium (full access), Standard (groupware in web client only), and Internet Mail User (email only), and discusses automatic email forwarding features. Next comes discussions of setting up filters, establishing failed-login lockouts, setting up "Smart Cache" for saving email locally, and indexing for accelerating groupware functions.

The author, Markus Feilner, is a Linux author, trainer, and consultant from Regensburg, Germany, working out of his own company, Feilner IT. He also works as a trainer, consultant, and systems engineer at Millenux in Munich, where he focuses on groupware, collaboration, and virtualization, using Linux-based systems and networks.
