OpenSUSE marks 750K installations in first six months
Jan. 05, 2006

Novell's OpenSUSE.org project appears to be off to a solid start in its first six months of operation. The company reported Wednesday that it has recorded more than 750,000 verified installations of the free version of its Linux operating system -- an average of more than 7,000 installations per day.

OpenSUSE's website, OpenSUSE.org, launched at LinuxWorld's San Francisco event last August, also recently surpassed 13 million page views of its website, Novell said.

The OpenSUSE.org project features free access to OS builds and releases. OpenSUSE users and developers have contributed thousands of suggestions, bug fixes, other significant input that will improve Novell's popular SUSE Linux distribution, Novell said.

Public development framework

OpenSUSE.org will soon add new resources and programs for open access to the development process used to create SUSE Linux, according to Novell. In the next few weeks, the OpenSUSE project will begin to release a public development framework, which will provide open source contributors and third-party application developers with tools and resources to streamline code and patch contributions to SUSE Linux, the company added.

The framework will include code libraries and a public build server that can be accessed and used by any registered project member. This will make it easier to create packages and applications that will run on SUSE Linux and SUSE Linux-based distributions, Novell said.

"SUSE Linux users, who number in the millions worldwide, continue to show their support by installing the software in great numbers and seeking more opportunities to collaborate with Novell," said Novell executive vice president and chief technology officer Jeff Jaffe.

"The huge interest in the openSUSE project shows they're serious about shaping and improving the software they use. We're thrilled at the level of involvement and are stepping up our commitment to maintain SUSE Linux as one of the most popular distributions in existence," Jaffe added.
