| Pentoo Linux releases mini distro live CD |

The Switzerland-based Pentoo Linux project team has released its first live CD, Mini-Pentoo 2006.1, team spokesman Michael Zanetta announced on July 7. The 208MB Gentoo-based "mini" distribution features a number of tools for auditing and testing a network, from scanning and discovering to exploiting vulnerabilities, the team said on its website.
Key new features on the live CD, according to the team, include: - 2.6.16 Linux kernel
- WiFi injection support for Madwifi-ng, Hostap, wlan-ng, rtl8180, and prism54/GT
- integrated portagedb, so no need for the module during install
- a new MPlayer module
- added Firefox extensions (Live-Http-Headers, Temper-data, ShowIP, No-Referrer)
- updated Nessus, Yersinia, bluediving, metasploit, nmap
- added Kismet, an auto-configure script based on airmon-ng
- Pentoo installer, Wifitap, tcpdump, Bluetooth stack smasher
Standard features of the distribution, as listed by the team, include:- Enlightenment desktop
Firefox 1.5.0.3 browser, GAIM 1.5.0 messenger
- Nessus, Metasploit, and Fingerprints DB upgradable; put them in RAM or on a USB stick
- Save files on a USB pen-drive or a hard disk, such as: /etc, /root, Nessus plugins, SecurityForest's Exploit Tree, and all fingerprints
- Modular -- customize it by adding modules, just as in Slax
- Faster -- based on the Gentoo distribution; all the code as been optimized
