SouthEast LinuxFest names speakers
May 19, 2010

[Updated: 8PM] -- The 2010 SouthEast LinuxFest (SELF) has announced a new round of speakers for the show, to be held June 11-13 in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Some 52 speakers have been announced, including Jon "Maddog" Hall (pictured), and Ubuntu and Fedora events have been scheduled.

The second-annual Southeast LinuxFest is billed as a community event for anyone who wants to learn more about Linux and free and open source (FOSS) software. Attendees of all skill levels are invited, say the SELF 2010 organizers.

Desktop Linux development appears to be the core offering, with a Ubucon event for Ubuntu folks offered over two days, split into two half-day sessions. There is also a Drupal Camp (adding 12 more speakers), a Fedora Activity Day, and a BSDA certification session, says the SELF team.

Some 30 speakers have been listed for the three-day event. Here are just a few:
  • Jon "Maddog" Hall -- Recently CTO of now apparently defunct Canadian open source software developers Koolu, Maddog (pictured) has been a Unix and Linux "programmer, systems administrator, product manager, technical marketing manager, educator, author, and trouble-maker" for 30 years.

  • Wietse Zweitze Venema -- Author of the Postfix mail system and the TCP Wrapper, Venema is also co-author of the Coroner's Toolkit (TCT) for forensic analysis, the Satan network scanner, and a book on Forensic Discovery. Venema is now an IBM research staff member.

  • Russ Woodman "K5TUX" -- A senior systems and network administrator with more than 20 total years of experience in BSD UNIX, Solaris, Linux, and Cisco networking devices, Woodman is co-founder and co-host of the "Linux in the Ham Shack" podcast.

  • Brian Smith -- Brian Smith is CTO of DNS.com, and a long time FOSS supporter and group organizer in the Louisville, Kentucky area.

  • Daniel Chen -- Dan Chen is an Ubuntu core developer who has worked on audio hardware enablement and integration issues across Ubuntu derivatives.

  • Andrew "Drew" Jensen -- Jensen is a long-time OpenOffice.org community member and co-founder of the project's User Services forums.

  • Pete Graner -- Graner is the Kernel & Hardware Enablement manager at Canonical, where he leads the Ubuntu Kernel team and is responsible for the hardware enablement of the x86 and ARM kernels for Ubuntu.

  • Amber Graner -- Amber Graner is an active Ubuntu community member and organizer, and an Ubuntu Women Project Team Leader as well as Ubuntu Weekly Newsletter editor-in-chief.

  • Vincent Batts -- A recent addition to the Slackware development team, Batts is an open source advocate in both the commercial arena as well as the community.

  • Rikki Kite -- Kite is the Associate Publisher of Linux Pro Magazine and Ubuntu User.

  • John Curran -- Curran is the President and CEO of the American Registry for Internet Numbers (ARIN), and has also been an active participant in the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF).

  • Keith Bergelt -- Bergelt is the CEO of Open Invention Network (OIN), an advocacy group for open source and Linux software.

  • Bryan Smith -- A long-time Debian Gnu/Linux and BSD enthusiast, as well as hardware hacker and systems engineer, Smith is CTO at Tacit Labs Inc and lead systems administrator at Dreamfish.com Global Collaborative.
