MEPIS LLC has released beta 3 of SimplyMEPIS-32 and SimplyMEPIS-64, version 6.0-4. If you've been having video problems with the earlier beta, this is the release for you.
In a statement, MEPIS founder and chief maintainer Warren Woodford said, "We've received lots of feedback and suggestions. So development is taking longer than I expected. On the other hand, every day SimplyMEPIS is getting better than it has ever been before. I expect to finish the improvements to the MEPIS utilities and the SimplyMEPIS Assistant for OSX during the next week."
Earlier versions of MEPIS, a Ubuntu-based, KDE Linux distribution, have been well-received by fans and experts alike.
With Beta 3, SimplyMEPIS includes updates to several key packages, including Firefox 2.0.0.1 and KDE 3.5.3. Bugs have been fixed in splashy, video detection, network configuration, long passwords, Skype VoIP on 64 bit, the klamav anti-virus program, installation, and more, according to Woodford.
The ISO image is available for download in the "testing" subdirectory of the MEPIS subscriber's webite, and on MEPIS public mirrors. New testers for MEPIS on the MacTel, in particular, are welcome, Woodford says. Contact MEPIS via email for more details.
The current MEPIS development cycle has been revised for a targeted final release date of approximately Jan. 26, 2007, adds Woodford.
Satisfied users are encouraged to make a contribution or make a purchase at the MEPIS store. Your support helps offset the costs of producing SimplyMEPIS 6.0 and funds further development of MEPIS Linux.
