| Xfce Linux desktop arrives at v4.4.0 |
Feb. 07, 2007
Following more than two years of development, the Xfce project team recently released version 4.4.0 of its popular open-source desktop environment. Xfce 4.4 includes new tools, such as the Thunar file manager, as well as several significant improvements to its core components, according to the release announcement.
According to the project's website, Xfce is a "lightweight" desktop environment for Linux and other UNIX systems that aims to be "visually appealing and easy to use." Xfce is modular, consisting various components packaged separately, so that users can configure their desired desktop environment.
Key new features in Xfce 4.4 are said to include:- New desktop icons
- Thunar file manager (in lieu of xffm)
- MousePad text editor
- A new Panel Manager that supports multiple panels
- Terminal Emulator, with built-in support for desktop composition
- A shortcut for the pop-up menu (Ctrl-Esc)
Thunar was written from scratch to provide an easy-to-use, but still very lightweight, file manager for Xfce, the team said. Its user interface was designed to look similar to the file chooser that was introduced with GTK+ 2.4. Thunar supports all the file management functionality users expect, as well as several advanced features, the release announcement said. For example, a Bulk Renamer is included, which allows users to rename multiple files at once using a certain criterion.
The Xfce4-panel was completely rewritten for this release, the team said. Multiple panels are supported out of the box, now, and can easily be configured using the new Panel Manager.
