Jul. 13, 2006

A new book aimed at both new and experienced users of Ubuntu Linux is due out in August. The Official Ubuntu Book, from Prentice Hall ($34.99), covers all the important facets of the popular new Linux distribution, and features a foreword by Ubuntu founder Mark Shuttleworth.

The book will show ordinary users how to install and use this free operating system, the publisher says. It demonstrates how to customize Ubuntu for personal and small business use, and sets the stage for using the distro's open-source power in schools, government, or businesses.

Written by Ubuntu community members, the volume:
  • covers both Ubuntu and Kubuntu desktop systems
  • covers the latest version of Ubuntu -- Dapper Drake 6.06
  • covers all standard desktop applications -- word processing spreadsheets, web browsing, email, instant messaging, music video, and games, as well as software development, databases, and other server applications
  • includes real-world troubleshooting advice
The book comes with a DVD that contains the live CD, the install CD, and the complete set of supported packages for Ubuntu, including Kubuntu.

The book is organized in nine chapters:
    Chapter 1 -- Introducing Ubuntu
    Chapter 2 -- Installing Ubuntu
Chapter 3 -- Using Ubuntu on the Desktop
Chapter 4 -- Advanced Usage and Managing Ubuntu
Chapter 5 -- The Ubuntu Server
Chapter 6 -- Support and Typical Problems
    Chapter 7 -- Using Kubuntu
Chapter 8 -- The Ubuntu Community
Chapter 9 -- Ubuntu Related Projects
The book also includes five appendices:
  • Welcome to the Command Line
  • Core Ubuntu Documents
  • Creative Commons Attribution
  • ShareAlike 2.0 Open Publication License
  • Ubuntu Equivalents to Windows Programs
