 The VectorLinux project announced a version 6.0 final release of its speedy Slackware-based distribution. Code named "Voyager," VectroLinux 6.0 adds a stable GUI installer, localization and wireless support, numerous new and updated drivers, and a repository with over 1,000 packages, says the Canada-based project.

Based on Slackerware 12 and Linux Kernel 2.6.27.12, the freely downloadable VectorLinux 6.0 is positioned as a small, fast, Linux operating system for x86-based PCs. The distro also comes in the usual $23 Deluxe version (pictured above), which is available on CD and offers additional bundled applications and features, says the VectorLinux project.
The 6.0 release is as speedy as ever, promises VectorLinux, and it represents a "massive improvement" in hardware detection and usage. In addition to numerous new and updated drivers and firmware, the release offers Wicd for managing networking tasks. The group has also added the Firestarter app for firewall protection, as well as new support for webcams.
Xfce-4.4.3 is provided as the default desktop, and comes with a custom theme and artwork. LXDE is said to be available as a secondary install. In addition to general upgrades all around, the new release offers new Slapt-get and Gslapt package management apps, as well as new Vasm and VasmCC system administration utilities, says the project.

Pre-existing features include DVD playback, multimedia codecs, multimedia and Java plugins, as well as Gimp, Inkscape, Gtkam, Gqview and Xpdf for graphics. Browsers include Firefox, Opera, Dillo, and Seamonkey, and messaging apps includes aMsn, Pidgin, and Xchat. VectorLinux offers K3b and the in-house Vburn for CD burning, as well as Mplayer, XMMS, Xine, and VLC for media playback, says the group. Productivity applications are said to include Gnumeric, Abiword, and Scribus.
The Deluxe version also adds KDE-4.2, E17, OpenOffice, Skype, Realplayer, Playonlinux, and Assaultcube, says VectorLinux. Available for high speed download or shipping in CD format, the Deluxe version also provides special graphics and themes.
The last major release of VectorLinux, version 5.8, arrived in December 2006.
