Tutorial explains setting up a file/print-server on Ubuntu
Jan. 09, 2006

A detailed online tutorial explains how to configure a Samba-controlled, Ubuntu-based server to act as file-and-print server for Windows workstations in small workgroups. The howto is aimed at Ubuntu 5.10 (Breezy Badger) and utilizes the tdb backend for Samba to store passwords and account information.

This is suitable for workgroups for up to 250 users and is easier to set up than an LDAP backend, author Till Brehm says in the howto published at HowtoForge.com. A second howto covering the installation of LDAP and Samba will be published soon, Brehm said.

Installed software needed are:
  • Samba as domain controller
  • Cups
  • Foomatic printer drivers
To install such a system, you will also need the following:
  • A Ubuntu install CD, available for free download here
  • An internet connection, because the author describes a network installation in the tutorial
