Linux for your iPod
Apr. 06, 2004

A new release from the "Linux on iPod" project supports first, second, and third-generation iPods (but not mini-iPods). The new release includes Podzilla, "a basic GUI demo similar to the native Apple firmware." iPod Linux installs alongside the native firmware.

The Project's first release came about a year ago, in early Feb. 2003.

The newest iPod Linux release is based on a 2.4.24 kernel. It does not offer full features yet like power management support for suspend and battery status, nor is Flash support or USB/audio input recording working yet.

iPod Linux does offer a frame buffer, audio device support, Firewire, button support via tty interface, and remote control. It uses MAD to play mp3's, at about 99 percent real-time, and Tremor to play Ogg Vorbis files, at about 80 percent real-time, according to the Project's Website.

While using the software on the iPod is a challenge to novie users, the project highlights the inroads Linux has made in the market.

More details, and downloads, are available on the iPod Linux Website.
