| Puppy Linux v1.0.9 emerges |
May 22, 2006
Although the Puppy Linux team is now focusing most of its effort on the upcoming version 2.0, the distribution's community released an updated version of the Linux-based Puppy 1.x series, v1.0.9, on May 22. It sports a 2.4.27 Linux kernel and a JWM desktop environment.
The live CD iso file weighs in at 62.1 MB -- still small enough to boot from a 64 MB USB, Zip drive, or RAM disk.
Australia-based Puppy's most redeeming feature is that it has a small footprint yet is full-featured, including all sorts of configuration and application installation wizards. Puppy can boot from a 64MB thumb drive, and the whole OS is small enough to run directly from system RAM. The result is that all applications start quickly and respond to user input instantly. Another advantage is that Puppy can often be a great choice for older, under-powered hardware.
New features in v1.0.9, as listed by the Puppy project team, include:- Firefox 1.5.0.3 browser
- XDG dynamically generated menus, portable for use in multiple window managers and ready for internationalization
- Geany 0.5 text editor as a replacement for Beaver
- Transmission 0.5 BitTorrent client
- new graphical background setter
- Leafpad 0.8.9 (text editor)
- Sylpheed 2.2.4 (email client)
- JWM 1.7 with Blinky 0.8 and miniXcal 1.1
- improved integration of ROX2.4.1 as an optional package
