Moving elderly dad, mom from Windows to Linux |
Dec. 05, 2005
XYZComputing.com has published a human-interest story about helping Mom and Dad learn to use a Linux-based desktop computer. The author explains how he moved his elderly parents from a problematic Windows XP desktop system to Mandriva PowerPack 10, leaving spyware, viruses, slow performance, and myriad other problems behind.
"I did not write this to say that people who do not know much about computers need to be told what to do, or to assert that Windows is not a good OS for casual users, but rather to point out that Linux is a great choice for this," Author Sal Cangeloso writes.
"Advances in desktop Linux have made it a perfect choice for casual and beginning users who don't necessarily have to (or want to) put up with Windows. Whether this is done for ease of use, to save on licensing fees, or so as to be able to make the best out of an old computer, it makes sense."
Their PC "was running Windows XP Professional for a few months and doing very well, as new computers often do. Rather than bore readers with all the details, let's just say that a year later the system was not doing so well. By this time the system was bogged down with spyware, probably a few viruses, lots of old programs, and anything else which could be detrimental to a computer's performance."
