| "Portable Firefox" 1.5.0.5 released |
Jul. 29, 2006
The "portable" version of Firefox 1.5.0.5 is now released, developer John Haller reports. "Portable Firefox" is the Mozilla Firefox web browser integrated with a "launcher" that makes it a fully portable app, enabling users to take their bookmarks, extensions, and saved passwords with them to whatever computer they're working on.
A "portable app" is a program that you can carry around with you on a portable device and use on any Windows computer -- and in some cases, on a Linux computer via WINE -- according to PortableApps.com, which distributes Firefox Portable and other portable apps. When your USB flash drive, portable hard drive, iPod, or other portable device is plugged in, you have access to your software and personal data just as you would on your own PC. And when you unplug the device, none of your personal data is left behind.
"This new release adds in a ton of new features, including: the ability to run from a CD, complete Firefox partial update support, in-place upgrades, lots of handy bug fixes, support for running within Wine on *nix and more," Haller wrote.
Firefox Portable -- officially known as the "Mozilla Firefox Portable Edition" -- features live CD support and in-place upgrades, among other attractions.
Mozilla just released Firefox 1.5.0.5, a security and bugfix patch, two days ago.
